Gas is expensive and plane travel is less than ideal these days. So what do you do when you have some time off and need a vacation? May we suggest a staycation. This suggestion may have the kids whining at first but we have some ideas to make it a great family experience. Now is the time to pretend you are a tourist in your own town. All of those things you drive by but never do, or think about only when you have visitors, this is your sign to go do them. If your vibe is staying at home, there are some great options to do there too.

Here is a list of helpful questions to get the creative juices flowing:

First, how are you looking to feel?

  • Relaxed
  • Energized
  • Peaceful
  • Entertained
  • Bonded

Do you want to leave the house or do things at home?

What sorts of things appeal to you?

  • City sights
  • Food
  • Outside
  • Relaxing
  • Entertainment
  • Bond with others

Here are some of our favorite suggestions:

The Great Taco Tour

Make a list of all of the best taco places near you, and go to all of them. Whether you do this for one meal (a flight, if you will, though if you go this direction we probably wouldn’t get a margarita each place or you’ll remember this for the wrong reason) or over a few days. Vote on your favorites and see which place is the family winner.  Note: this doesn’t have to be tacos, it could be ice cream, or anything you are passionate about.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

Think Game Night but over a few days. Everyone gets to pick a game! Pair this with the appropriate snacks per game and this is a guaranteed good time. Who will be the master game winner of them all? Only time will tell, but there should be an appropriate game master crown or shirt for sure, as well as the ultimate bragging rights.

Movie Night(s)

We can’t think of a better time to watch the whole Harry Potter series (or any series) than over a few days in the Summer. Keep the snacks and meals themedagain  of course. Other ideas? Lord of the Rings, iconic movies from the 80’s, fright night, we could go on, but you get the idea. (If you go Harry Potter, don’t forget to pick which houses each family member are from!)

Pot Lucky

Plan a party but don’t leave all of the work to one person and have each person contribute one thing, but there’s a catch. There’s a secret ingredient they have to use or a theme they have to go by. They have to present their dish and tell people why they deserve to win. Vote on the winning dish. Extra points for creativity and sales skills.

The Great Outdoors

Make a list of some of the hikes within an hour around you. Pick the appropriate levels and do a hike a day. Put together the pictures you take and later create a little photo book for memories. Be sure to check the weather before you head out and pack plenty of snacks and water.

We hope these ideas create the ultimate staycation for you and your family.
